Civil Works Expo

1

On Thursday 27th July 2023 Central Hawke’s Bay hosted its first-ever Civil Works Expo, organized by Jobs in Central Hawke’s Bay. With the growing demand for infrastructure development in Central Hawke’s Bay, the event aimed to bridge the gap between jobseekers and potential employers. The goal was to create a platform where jobseekers could explore career options in the civil works sector and connect with local businesses actively seeking new employees.

The expo featured a range of local civil works infrastructure businesses, including construction companies, earthworks companies, and road maintenance firms as well as support from the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council’s Project Management Office and Ministry of Social Development. Each of the 16 stallholders had a table where they showcased their work, projects, and employment opportunities.

Jobseekers had the chance to interact with representatives from these companies, ask questions, and learn more about the industry. The expo also provided an opportunity for CONNECT Drivers Licencing - a local licensing agency, to provide information on how jobseekers could enhance their skills and qualifications by obtaining new endorsements on their driver's licenses. This was particularly relevant for those interested in pursuing careers in the civil works industry, as many roles require specific endorsements such as heavy vehicle operation or machinery operation.

The Civil Works Expo received a fantastic response from both jobseekers and businesses with around 40 members of the public attending. Jobseekers appreciated the opportunity to connect directly with potential employers and gain a better understanding of the industry. Local businesses also benefited from the event, as they were able to showcase their work, attract potential employees and network with others in their industry. One employee/job seeker who attended the Expo said: “Aside from being linked to candidates, the event was a great opportunity to connect with employers in the civil space.

Overall, the first-ever Civil Works Expo in Central Hawke’s Bay was a success. It brought together job seekers and local businesses, creating a space for meaningful connections and opportunities. The event not only highlighted the growing demand for infrastructure development in our region but also showcased the potential for career growth and advancement in the civil works industry. With the positive response received, it is likely that the expo will become an annual event, further strengthening the connection between job seekers and the local civil works sector in Central Hawke’s Bay.
