From July 2022, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council will be upgrading the water main that runs along Pōrangahau Road between Lake View Road and Gaisford Terrace.
We know this is a critical asset for our community and we are upgrading this water main to address known challenges related to the network reliability and resilience and improve performance for our community.
This work will also future proof this asset, ensuring it can support the rapid population growth we are seeing in Waipukurau.
The Fulton Hogan team will be delivering this project as contractors to council.
Lake View Road to Peterson Place
The work taking place from Lake view Road to Peterson Place will include upgrading the existing water mains to a new pipe and replacing the water service connection to your property and boundary toby boxes (approximately 22 service connections are planned to be replaced). New fire hydrants and isolation valves will also be installed on the new water main.
Peterson Place to Gaisford Terrace
The work taking place between Peterson Place and Gaisford Terrace include upgrading the existing water mains to a new pipe and replacing the water service connection to your property and boundary toby boxes (approximately 34 service connections are planned to be replaced). New fire hydrants and isolation valves will also be installed on the new water main.
As we continue to battle this terrible weather, we are pleased to let you know that we are still making good progress on this project. Over the last month the following has been completed:
• Completed directional drilling and pipe installation for stage one. (Lake View Road to Peterson Place). You may have seen the team along with various plant pulling the pipe through the ground.
• Backfilled most of the open trenches that were in place for directional drilling.
• 10 connections, 63 ridermains and two of three hydrants have been installed throughout stage 1.
• Traffic management remains in place, and you will notice that this will continually change as needed. This to open up the road where possible whilst still protect the contractors working on site as well anyone using the road (pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles).
• Preconstruction pipe welding and site exploration is underway for Stage two (Peterson Place to Gaisford Tce).
Fulton Hogan has set up on site and have begun investigations of the existing pipelines. Traffic management has been set up which will help protect their workers from vehicles moving throughout the road.
This upgrade will see the old cast iron and asbestos cement main replaced with a bigger pipeline to support growth in the area.
The team will be on site in July 2022 with the completion of the upgrade expected in May 2023.

Yes, contractors will ensure all areas are left safe and tidy, with barriers around any excavations and residents informed of potential risks outside of working hours.
There will be minor disruptions while the water supply is changed over from the old supply to the new supply. We will communicate with affected residents in advance of any water supply shutdowns. If you are reliant on water, please do advise your key council contact.
There will be traffic management in place to ensure the safety of residents and teams undertaking the work. We will work with Fulton Hogan to ensure residents are aware of the project and to keep these traffic interruptions to a minimum.
There won’t be any major restrictions, although there may be short periods of time when access to some driveways is limited. Individual property owners/tenants will be advised in advance.
There will be some noise because of vehicle movements and equipment operation. The impact of noise on the community will vary according to the time of day, nature of work and proximity to the noise source.
