The publication of the draft Urban Growth Strategy (UGS) marked the beginning of the Urban Centres Review in which Council considered the issues relating to the growth and development of the two town centres of Waipawa and Waipukurau. The draft Urban Growth Strategy considers the demands facing Council in regard to likely future growth and development options and presents a range of options to address these issues. At the time of printing the Draft Urban Growth Strategy took into consideration the "state of play" at the time with the proposed Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme (RWSS).
"Hawke’s Bay Regional Council voted unanimously in 2017 to move on from the Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme and focus its efforts on other priorities.
The ability for the scheme to proceed remains uncertain in light of the Supreme Court’s decision not to allow the Department of Conservation land swap necessary for the construction of the proposed Ruataniwha dam.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council completed the sale of the Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme intellectual property and assets to Water Holdings CHB Limited, from Central Hawke’s Bay, for $100,000.
