Meet Ben Swinburne, Project Manager at CHBDC

Ben photo for interview

How do you describe your role to family and friends?
I am responsible for the successful delivery of projects – making sure that the important stuff gets done and we get the best outcome for the community.

What’s the best part of your job?
The challenges – while it doesn’t always feel like it at the time, navigating through challenges and getting a positive outcome gives me a sense of achievement at the end of each day.

What is the most exciting aspect of working on The Big Wastewater Story?
Having the opportunity to be part of something that will completely change the way we deliver wastewater services in the future and the positive environmental and community outcomes that go with that.

What is something people might not know about Wastewater?
I think a lot of people generally don’t know what happens to their wastewater once they flush or empty their kitchen sink, but there is a complex series of events that eventually leads to that water getting to the treatment plant, being treated, and eventually re-entering the natural environment in some way.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about Wastewater?
That there is value in wastewater and wastewater treatment by-products and how we can utilise and manage wastewater in a way that is both more sustainable and productive.

If you could automate one part of your job, what would it be?
None – it's all awesome…

What is one thing you couldn’t live without at work?
All my supportive team members and the advice/guidance that they provide.

What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?
Tough one…bit of golf, hang out with family, sit on my lawnmower for a couple of hours with a good playlist on my headphones.

What is your favourite thing to do or place to visit in Central Hawke’s Bay?
Onga Onga Golf Club – preferably on a nice Friday afternoon.
