Central Hawke’s Bay District Council is calling on all tidy Kiwis to participate in the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week, running in Central Hawke’s Bay, from 25 to 31 October.

Clean Up Week is a nation-wide initiative which encourages Kiwis to come together with their friends, family, school, business or local community group to participate in New Zealand’s largest clean up event and make a significant difference to their local area.

In 2020, Clean Up Week saw a total number of 57,936 volunteers take part cleaning up an area - equivalent to 4,935 rugby fields and collecting a total of 561,979kg of litter.

Locally, Council has worked to enable and encourage Central Hawke’s Bay to take part in the event. 300 reusable Keeping New Zealand Beautiful waste collection bags are available to anyone wanting to be involved in the event through collection from the Council Office, Central Hawke’s Bay District Library and The Knowledge and Learning Hub – Te Huinga Wai in Waipukurau.

During Clean Up Week, all Central Hawkes Bay Transfer Stations will provide free disposal of rubbish when using the Keeping New Zealand Beautiful reusable waste collection bags.

Council is also offering free household green waste disposal to finish off Clean Up Week on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October, limited to one domestic trailer load.

Deputy Mayor Kelly Annand has been at the forefront of championing the Clean Up Week for Central Hawke’s Bay and promoting a Waste-Free CHB message and community responsibility to be tidy kiwis.

“The Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week is a chance to rally the community to clean up and keep Central Hawke’s Bay beautiful,” said Deputy-Mayor Annand.

“It's a perfect opportunity for us to come together and help clean up our local parks, beaches and waterways and reduce our impact on the environment.”

The community is encouraged to undertake a local clean up on their patch of Central Hawke’s Bay paradise, by registering on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website, to receive a clean-up pack including gloves and rubbish bags. This could still be done in family groups, school groups and amongst workplaces under Level 2 restrictions.
