Second-Hand Sunday Attracts Record Numbers

Friday 1 March 2019

The streets of Ongaonga, Takapau, Waipukurau, Otane and Waipawa were buzzing with Second-Hand Sunday underway on 17 February.

The annual event takes place in February and is a great opportunity for local residents to have a look at any surplus or unwanted items they may be storing in their homes and make them available on Second-Hand Sunday for others to collect for free.

Now in its fifteenth year, the annual event continues to go from strength to strength since its inaugural event in 2005, when 36 properties registered. This year’s event saw a record number achieved with 80 properties registered and several more properties taking part on the day. It’s encouraging for Central Hawke’s Bay District Council to see 39 new properties register this year, a great reflection of our local communities spirit of generosity and also a desire for a sustainable Central Hawke’s Bay.

Council’s Solid Waste Officer and Second-Hand Sunday Co-ordinator, Themba Ncomanzi visited many of the townships on the day and was impressed by the height of activity as property owners were getting their items ready to place by the kerbside and many cars and trailers busy arranging collections.

“There were plenty of smiling faces with lots of people enjoying their treasure hunt,” says Themba Ncomanzi.

A new resident to the district, Erika Senekal Basson, was impressed with what Second-Hand Sunday had to offer. Her 2 ½ year old daughter Naomi was delighted with her find and can’t wait to spend many hours playing outdoors on her newly acquired slide.

Erika mentioned to Themba that she was looking forward to participating in future Second-Hand Sundays and was excited about being part of such a generous community.
