New Kerbside Recycling Process Implemented by Council

Waipawa planting June 17.

Thursday 8 November 2018

This week, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council has implemented a change in the way that it manages kerbside recycling in the district - separating glass from other recyclables and introducing new, standardised containers for every household.

Historically, every household that has paid for kerbside collection had been provided with an approved council container, something that General Manager Community and Infrastructure Josh Lloyd says is now being revisited as part of the change.

“We’ve found that a fair few people had taken their recycling bins with them when they moved house rather than leaving the bin with the property as intended. To remedy this, we’re asking people who don’t have an approved council container to contact us to arrange for a delivery.”  The change in how household recyclables are sorted has been brought about by the changes in international markets for recycled products, as well as safety concerns for the collection teams.

“In order to recycle products properly we need to remove all potential contaminants. For items like cardboard and paper - any sign of broken glass means that the cardboard and paper has to be sent to the landfill.  “We want to make sure that everything placed on the kerbside to be recycled, is recycled as intended. We’re now asking the community to separate their glass into a different container for collection, removing hazards for our team and potential contamination.”

“We realise that this change hasn’t been communicated well, and acknowledge that there has been some frustration and confusion from the community who really want to do the right thing.”

The Central Hawke’s Bay District Council will be releasing recycling guidelines to the community over the next week, and are in the process of securing new glass-only containers that will be distributed to all households. If you’d like to arrange the delivery of a council approved container for your other recyclables please email thrive@chbdc.govt.nz, and keep an eye out for more information on the delivery of the second glass-only container.

Key points for households:

  • Please clean your recyclable products where possible.
  • Please separate your glass products from paper, cardboard, tin and plastic and place in a separate container (no plastic bags).
  • Please place your paper, cardboard, tin and plastics in the council container.
  • If you do not have an approved council container, you can use an equivalent plastic container up to 60L and email the council on thrive@chbdc.govt.nz to have one delivered.
  • Please only recycle plastics numbered 1 - 7.
