Work is underway to upgrade the Pourerere Beach Reserve at the northern end of the beach. Fully funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment as part of the Tourism Infrastructure Fund and developed in partnership with Sport Hawke’s Bay, Forest & Bird and mana whenua, the upgrade delivers on the actions identified for this area in Council’s Reserve Management Plan, which was developed in consultation with the wider community.

The upgrade will improve the 0.5-hectare reserve for day visitors and ensure easy accessibility to the beach by providing a car park, accessible walkway and bird-watching platform. These improvements will also help protect our natural environment and neighbouring dunes while preventing the disposal of green waste in the area, which has been an issue in the past.
