Together we're working toward a Waste Free CHB!

Let’s be Waste Free CHB!

Most of the things we do, buy, and consume generate some form of waste. This not only costs money when we have to throw things away but, if we don’t manage the waste properly, it can also cause problems with the environment and with people’s health.

You have told us that together we need to reduce what is going into our landfill, increase re-use and recycling, raise awareness and education and ensure that our services are practical and affordable.

While Council has a leading role in many aspects of how we manage and minimise waste in the district, we need the support and skills of our communities to deliver on our joint plan and vision of a Waste Free CHB.

Last July, during the development of our current Waste Minimisation Plan, we asked you how you would like to see Central Hawke’s Bay’s waste be managed and minimised across the district.

And as a community, we have identified that we want to:

  • Be committed to minimising waste sent to landfill.
  • Consider, and where appropriate implement, new initiatives and innovative ways to assist in reducing, reusing and recycling wastes.
  • Minimise environmental harm and protect public health.
  • Work in partnership with others.

Behind the scenes, Council have been working to set targets and goals, to directly tackle these issues.

As a community, we’ve set targets to:

  • Increase diversion from landfill to 70% by 2040
  • Increase diversion from landfill to 48% by 2025
  • Increase participation in kerbside recycling services to 60% by 2025

Now, it's time to make it happen.

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council is currently working to set the direction of the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan, and we want to make sure we’re on the right track. So, we’re inviting you to have your say on the future of our solid waste service, before we formally consult on the upcoming Long Term Plan, early in 2021. Check back here to have your say between 3 - 23 August and in the meantime, take a look through our Waste Free CHB hub for information and tips.
