Roads and StreetsNgā kōrero o ngā rori me ngā tiriti

Roading is integral to our District - it keeps the economy thriving and helps us to get from A to B (especially important when heading to the beach or one of our amazing local events)!

 What's Happening on CHB Roads

Tourere Road:

Is currently single lane for light residential traffic only. Council staff, engineers and contractors have been working hard to find a temporary and permanent solution to ensure the safety of road users, residents and construction teams. Works on the longer-term permanent solution will continue. We will provide more detail on this as it becomes available.

Porangahau and Wimbledon Roads:

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, with funding from the Provincial Growth Fund, is improving transport infrastructure for the communities along the Porangahau and Wimbledon roads.

In June 2019 Council received $20.1m in Provincial Growth Funding (PGF) from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to improve transport infrastructure for communities on Porangahau and Wimbledon Roads.

With growing volumes of freight using the route, reliability and resilience needs to be assured if the regional economy is to be protected and opportunities for productivity are enhanced.

The conclusion of this project will provide future generations with safe and durable roading infrastructure along what is a key thoroughfare in our district.

The total programme encompasses many different projects and types of work spread along the length of the route, including the Flaxmill Bridge area improvements. While Flaxmill is a priority and will require some of the largest investment and effort, there are many identified sites for improvement. This work will include safety improvements, pavement improvements and the strengthening of walls and culverts. Work is underway and will continue through to June 2022 across the programme.

You can follow details of this work programme here.
