This month we meet Andrew Quigley, Principal Engineer – Transportation at Stantec, the Engineers on the Provincial Growth Fund Porangahau and Wimbledon Road Upgrade Project.

How do you describe your role to family and friends?
I generally discuss how I manage design resources to deliver safe, technical solutions for client’s projects. I really enjoy projects that provide a safety benefit to local communities and how I can bring best practice from across NZ/ Australia to a local region.

What is your proudest moment in your role so far?
There are a few actually; Flying into Rockhampton in Queensland to help deliver $1B of roading improvements after cyclone Yasi devasted the region in 2011, the end of the runway was still underwater…Delivering the 2017-2020 Pedestrian Level Crossing Upgrade Programme for Auckland Transport to install automatic gates at 18 Rail level crossings to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities at these crossing places. Delivering the Dunedin Separated Cycleways on two one-way State Highways right through the middle of the city to reduce the rate of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities on these routes; since delivery, no deaths or serious injury incidents have occurred.

What is the most exciting aspect of working on the Porangahau and Wimbledon Rd Upgrade Project?
Knowing that once our works are completed, we will have provided a better outcome for the local community. Meeting the locals and understanding what really affects them and working out if we can mitigate those issues as part of the project.
What is one thing about working on land transport / roading projects that people might not know? All our roading projects, no matter how large or small are working towards the Governments Road to Zero policy; to reduce the number of death and serious injury crashes on our networks.

What is one element of the Porangahau and Wimbledon Road Upgrade that you are most looking forward to completing?
Even though its not part of our works and won’t be completed for a number of years, what I’m looking forward to seeing the most is the rejuvenation of the Wanstead wetland as it’s got the potential to be a major asset to the region for generations to come.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Write a to do list, prioritise it, create a list of actions from it, track the actions and then update the to do list…

If you could automate one part of your job, what would it be?
Answering emails.

What is one thing you couldn’t live without at work?
Lunch…it let’s me get away from my computer and my desk and gives me time to go for a walk and re-focus.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?
Playing football, coaching kids football and relaxing with my family.

Best minute of your life so far?
Lots really, getting married, birth of my two boys, relaxing on the bank of any river with a fishing rod in my hand and realising how lucky we are.

What is your favourite place or thing to do in Hawke’s Bay?
Running along the banks of the Karituwhenua Stream Reserve.
