Waipukurau Transfer Station - Glass Bunkers

Waipukurau Transfer Station – Glass Bunkers

Council received a $20k grant from the Glass Packaging Forum to assist in revamping the Glass Storage bunkers at the Waipukurau Transfer station, this funding has been topped up by the Solid Waste team and from the Waste Levy fund to make the project possible.

The old bunkers were not big enough - glass must be sorted into its three base colours (clear, green and brown) before being recycled into new containers, and bunkers which are too small can cause contamination as colours accidentally mix.

The new larger bunkers were built in the existing location, but will be constructed of 600mm thick interlocking concrete blocks (over 100 tons worth). This will mean a fast build time, a stronger structure and allows for future expansion if needed.

Barkers Contracting was engaged as our construction partner.

The bunkers are now being fully utilised and are perfect for separating glass into it's three base colours, avoiding accidental contamination!

Last week Barkers contractors received and placed all the precast concrete interlocking blocks from Envirocon in Auckland. The install went smoothly, and the new Glass Bunker at the Waipukurau Transfer Station quickly took shape. The new bunkers are both taller and wider than the old bunkers. Following an inspection and sign off this week by the operations team, the new bunkers will be able to be utilised and receive their first load of recycled glass. Many thanks to Barker Contractors who have delivered this well ahead of schedule!

Glass Bunker

Supported by the Glass Packaging Forum, CHBDC and contract partners Barkers Contracting are about to start an upgrade to the glass storage area at the Waipukurau Transfer Station. This area is the area currently used for the storage of glass prior to it being sent to a recycling facility. The upgrade aims to provide greater storage capacity and enable future expansion as required.

Construction is starting on the 15th of February and is expected to take approximately 7 weeks to complete.

We do not expect this construction to cause any significant disruption to the operation of the Transfer station with alternate locations expected for the disposal of both scrap metal and broken concrete.

Due to the risk of the glass becoming contaminated within the temporary bunkers, glass will be sent to the Waipukarau Landfill to be recycled there as a substrate material for future development of cells at the landfill. Once the bunker project is complete, normal glass recycling operations will continue with our recycling partners.
