Kairakau Water Supply Improved After Repairs Made to Local Bore

Kairakau July 2018 5 KS SMALL

The coastal community of Kairakau has been under pressure this summer after the failure of a bore feeding the area’s network on Friday 3 January, meant Level 4 water restrictions were put in place.

“The Council would like to thank the people of Kairakau for their patience while we worked to resolve this event. After completing a detailed assessment of the bore we determined it did not need to be replaced and instead the necessary repairs were made to the current system mid last week. Reservoir levels have now improved and are holding” says Mrs Davidson. “Upgrades to the Kairakau Water Supply will be brought forward from 2022, and are planned to commence this year, as part of The Big Water Story capital works programme, which will see approximately $32 million in capital investment over the next 10 years in 3 waters infrastructure in Central Hawke’s Bay.”

“Based on repairs made to Kairakau’s bore water restrictions have been moved from Level 4 in the areas, to Level 3” says Mrs Davidson. “With river levels at critically low levels and pressure being placed on our rural communities as a result of this, the Council have now moved all other areas of the District to Level 3 also.”

Level 3 water restrictions means sprinkler use is prohibited, however hand held hoses can be used on alternate days only, at limited times. Private washing of vehicles or buildings is allowed only with a bucket or sponge and swimming pools can be topped up for a maximum of 15 minutes per day. Hosing of hard surfaces is not allowed as part of general cleaning.
