foreshore kairakau

Kairakau Beach

Head east from Waipawa along Tamumu Road. This road changes to Pourerere Rd after about 2kms. Turn left onto River Road, then right onto Elthorpe Road. At Elsthorpe village is a fork, the right fork will take you to Kairakau beach, then follow the signs.

Travel time 30 minutes

Ideal for swimming, fishing and surfing. This also has a popular camping ground.

A clearly sign posted area is available at the end of the beach road for overnight stops for fully self contained motorhomes only.

Mangakuri Beach

The same directions as for Kairakau Beach, but turn right onto Mangakuri Road, just before Kairakau. No camping

Travel time 40 minutes.

Ideal for swimming, fishing and snorkelling. Mangakuri has a combination of magnificent sandy beach and interesting rocky shore.

Pourerere Beach

Travel east from Waipawa on Tamumu Road. This road changes to Pourerere Rd after about 2kms. Follow the signs

Travel time 35 minutes

Ideal for fishing, swimming and surfing. Has camping ground but please refer to the camping instructions here. Boats can be launched from the beach.

Aramoana Beach

Same directions as for Pourerere Beach, but turn right onto Gibraltar Rd, just before Pourerere.

Aramoana has beach access and reserve with public amenities. Sandy beach, swimming and fishing. Camping is prohibited but there are 3 marked parking spaces at the southern end of the public car park where ONLY fully self contained motor homes are permitted to stay overnight.

Blackhead Beach

Hosts Te Angi Angi Marine Reserve

Travel east from Waipawa on Tamumu Road. About 2kms along this road, the name will change to Pourerere Rd. Follow this until you come to Long Range Road on your right and follow the signs, or head south east from Waipukurau on Tavistock Road, Farm Road, and follow the signs

Travel time 45 minutes

Ideal for fishing, swimming. There is no ‘freedom camping' at Blackhead and camping is only permitted in the ‘Blackhead Beach Camping Ground'.  Contact 06 857-7335 for availability

Pōrangahau Beach

Travel south from Waipukurau along Pōrangahau Road. Follow the signs
Horse races are held on the beach at Easter and Blow Karts catch the seabreezes there all year round.

Travel time 40 minutes

Ideal for fishing & surfing. There is a camping ground as well as freedom camping. These areas are sign posted.

Whangaehu Beach

This beach is 30 minutes drive time from the Pōrangahau township. There are public toilets available however the beach is isolated and it is recommended that you take enough supplies for the trip.
