Have your say on the future of Waipawa's main street

Waipawa’s main street (State Highway 2) is an important and busy thoroughfare in Central Hawke’s Bay, and we want to know how you think we could make it safer and more connected – for our community and anyone else that travels on it.

On Wednesday 22 June and Thursday 23 June, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council will be running ‘Walk and Talk’ sessions along the main street to gather feedback and ideas.

Local businesses and groups, residents and the wider community are invited to join Mayor Alex Walker, councillors, and members of the council team as they walk from the carpark next to the CHB Museum, and to share their thoughts to help shape the future of Waipawa’s main street.

Mayor Alex Walker says: “Waipawa has big hopes and dreams for their main street, and as the town that welcomes all visitors to Central Hawke’s Bay from the north, we know there’s so much we can do."

We have seen and heard the petitions, concerns, and ideas, but we now have the opportunity to talk about solutions – how to encourage people to interact with our main street and, most of all, to be safe.”

To do this the best we can, we know that it is the businesses, the locals, the kids, and the shoppers that will helps us create solutions, so we really encourage everyone to come along and help us out."

People can also have their say by completing a survey online at https://www.chbdc.govt.nz/our-district/projects/streets-for-people/ or by picking up a hard copy at The Knowledge and Learning Hub -Te Huinga Wai in Waipukurau, the Waipawa Library or reception at the council offices.

The survey will be open until 1 July 2022.

The survey results will help inform Central Hawke’s Bay District Council’s proposal to get full funding to be a part of the national Streets for People programme, established by Waka Kotahi.

The next steps are for the council to present a proposal to Waka Kotahi and if we are successful in this stage, we will be coming back to the community with how we, with you, will be proceeding with improving Waipawa’s main street.

The Streets for People programme aims to make it easier to create safer, healthier and more people-friendly streets, so everyone can get to where they are going safely.
