Central Hawke’s Bay took another step towards achieving its target of decreasing waste to land fill, after this year’s ‘Second Hand Sunday’ event.

The Waste Free CHB event held on Sunday achieved a record number of registrations, with residents encouraged to host their own free garage sales offering to rehome a range of items that would otherwise end up in landfill.  The Council led initiative plays a big part in the Districts Waste Free CHB aim of diverting waste from landfill, with a goal of achieving a 48% diversion rate by 2025.

Second Hand Sunday is one of several events run by the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council as part of the Districts Waste Free CHB vision, with other events planned for 2022 including Bale wrap recycling, Bokashi composting and worm farming workshops.

Strategy and Wellbeing Committee Chair and Deputy Mayor, Kelly Annand said that the increase of community engagement year on year was really positive.

“Second hand Sunday is always fun – people get to know their neighbours from down the street while rehoming unwanted goods and doing their bit for the environment”, said Deputy Mayor Kelly Annand.
‘It’s great that we are working towards our Waste Free CHB goals, what’s not to love about this event!”

A record number of registrations for the event this year were received with over 106 registered properties and many more homes opting to take part on the day.  With the event growing each year, Council are keen to hear your feedback on how to continue to improve and grow the event.  You can do this by heading to Councils website www.chbdc.govt.nz and searching Waste Free CHB.
