Central Hawke’s Bay’s Second Hand Sunday breaks record

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council has received record registrations for this year’s Second Hand Sunday, a Council led Waste Free CHB event.

Now in its 18th year, the event has broken a new record with 104 registrations, up by 34 from the 2019 event which saw 80 registered participants.

Second Hand Sunday was developed as a way to offer residents a chance to pass on their surplus or unwanted goods to the wider community before reverting to landfill.

This Sunday 27 February from 9am -1pm, participating homes can leave their goods on their front berm or driveway, giving others a chance to rehome items or collect for re-use or repurposing projects.

Deputy Mayor, Kelly Annand and Chair of the Strategy and Wellbeing Committee, said it was great to see such a positive reaction from our community.

“Every year this event gets bigger and bigger and we love the involvement and enthusiasm - it really reflects the community engagement towards our long term vision for a waste free CHB."

All participants who registered before Monday 21 February will receive a pack from the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council with posters and information to help with their success on the day. Their addresses are also published in the CHB Mail and on the Council website.

Still want to be involved? There’s still time! Anyone who still wants to be involved is encouraged to sort through their belongings and leave unwanted items outside their property on Sunday 27 February until 1pm.
