Orange or Green, What Does It Mean? New Rubbish and Recycling Days for Waipukurau

Map

A spike in kerbside recycling uptake has prompted Central Hawke’s Bay District Council to make a change to their residential rubbish and recycling collection service in Waipukurau.

From Monday 23 November, residences located in Waipukurau’s newly identified ‘orange’ zone will have their rubbish and recycling collected on Mondays, from 7.30am. Residences located in the ‘green’ zone will have their rubbish and recycling collected every Tuesday, from 7.30am.

Residents will receive notice of whether they are located in the orange zone, or the green zone, by mailbox. A map demonstrating the zoning can also be found at the Council's Waste Free CHB Hub as well as in the CHB Mail in coming weeks. Residents of Waipukurau are encouraged to contact Council’s customer service for clarification, or with any other questions.

Chief Executive of the Council, Monique Davidson, cites several reasons for the change of service.

“There has been a marked increase in the volume of recycling being put to the kerb in Waipukurau every week which has seen our staff and contractors at Smart Environmental working longer hours to complete the run – despite introducing efficiencies to respond to this,” says Ms Davidson.

“For the health and safety of our people, it’s important that we move to split this collection over two days.

“Our community will feel immediate benefits in doing this as it’ll improve the reliability of the service.

“Additionally, it means that Waipukurau’s residents will be able to put both rubbish and recycling out on the same day – saving time and effort!”

The announcement comes after earlier changes to the Council’s solid waste service, most recently regarding the collection of plastics 1, 2 and 5 only, in line with international recycling regulations.

“Central Hawke’s Bay District Council acknowledge that there has been a number of changes occur in the solid waste space in recent months and apologise for any confusion that has come as a result of this,” says Ms Davidson.

“As we work toward a Waste Free CHB, we are discovering new initiatives and efficiencies which require initial changes to our service offering, for the long term benefit of our District.

“I thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this latest change,” continues Ms Davidson.

Mayor of Central Hawke’s Bay, Alex Walker, is pleased that the kerbside recycling collection is growing in Waipukurau.

“Central Hawke’s Bay have been avid recyclers for nearly 20 years now and it still continues to grow – even with the changes to markets and services! Unlike many other districts in New Zealand, we still have our own landfill which means we take our responsibilities seriously.”
