From 1 December through to 1 March 2019, the Central Hawke’s Bay Settlers Museum in Waipawa will be celebrating the homecoming of many taonga to Central Hawke’s Bay.

Nga Taonga o Tamatea – Te Hokinga Mai is the first exhibition of its kind at the Central Hawke’s Bay Settlers Museum, and brings home taonga from MTG Hawke’s Bay in Napier, Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington, and from private collections around the country.

As well as bringing the scattered taonga home, the exhibition has been an opportunity to build relationships between the museum and taiwhenua.

Settlers Museum committee member Donald Tipene (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Kere) has worked alongside curator/manager Jana Uhlirova and the community to help bring the exhibition together. He’s very excited that so many taonga are returning home to be seen by the Central Hawke’s Bay community.

“One of the taonga being loaned for this exhibition is a piupiu, which has been in storage since it was donated by a local family to the Dominion Museum in 1909. It probably hasn’t been seen in public since then.”

Many taonga from this country have found their way overseas in the past, to the point where, Donald says, there are more items in the British Museum than in the whole of Aotearoa. This makes it even more special to have an exhibition like this, in a small town, where people can see their own local history and learn more about the stories of the area and its people.

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council are proud supporters of the Central Hawke’s Bay Settlers Museum, funding the organisation on behalf of the community to host exhibitions and events such as Nga Taonga o Tamatea.
