Running for Council is challenging and there is a lot to know!
To assist with this, Local Government New Zealand have prepared a series of videos that'll give you a detailed insight into what you might expect if you put yourself forward for the 2019 elections. Scroll down to get to the videos. But first, some basic information for you.
You must be a New Zealand citizen and your name must be on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll (anywhere in New Zealand).
You will need to have two electors registered in the area of the election you are standing for to nominate you – e.g. if you stand for the Ruahine/Aramoana Ward, the nominators will need to be registered within that Ward.
The nominators must also be on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll at the address they are listed on the nomination paper (which must be in the area that they are nominating the person for). A candidate cannot nominate themselves.
Nothing formal. Elected Members represent a diverse community who come from all walks of life. If you are passionate about serving your community, are on the Parliamentary roll and are a New Zealand Citizen, you could stand for Council.
You will need to submit a completed nomination form, Candidate Profile Statement, photo and a $200 deposit.
You may get this deposit refunded if you receive a certain percentage of the votes.
You can pick up your nomination form from our Customer Service Centre at 28-32 Ruataniwha Street, Waipawa or from our website.
We'll be putting them up as soon as nominations open (on Friday 19 July 2019). You can also phone toll free number 0800 666 921.
Nominations are open from Friday 19th July until Friday 16th August at 12 noon.
Nomination documents for the Central Hawke's Bay District Council candidates must be in the hands of the following before close of nominations:
The Electoral Officer:
PO Box 3138, Christchurch
Phone: 0800 666 921
The Deputy Electoral Officer:
Central Hawke’s Bay District Council
PO Box 127, Waipawa

It's important to note that nomination documents must be submitted at the same time, i.e. nomination paper, candidate profile statement, photo and nomination deposit. A nomination will not be accepted if any components are missing.
