Sustainable Ewe to receive $10,000 from CHB District Council Environmental and Sustainability Committee

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council’s Environmental and Sustainability Fund will grant up to $10,000 for a sign written trailer, to help local community group Sustainable Ewe in their bid to reduce waste going into local landfills.
 
Sustainable Ewe runs a website and Facebook page devoted to sustainable living - including recycling and reducing waste, preserving, gardening, water conservation and more. 
 
Four-years-ago, their campaign for a more sustainable future saw them launch ‘The Great Bucket Rescue,’ which recycles more than 200, 15-litre food grade buckets per week into Bokashi composting kits, worm farms and chook feeders.
 
The kits are distributed throughout Central Hawke’s Bay and beyond, with profits from their sale used to provide free kits for more than 30 schools in the district.
 
A designated trailer will not only make it easier to transport the buckets, but will also serve as a one-stop education hub, to share knowledge about the management of green waste, food waste and recycling.
 
Sustainable Ewe Founder Neen Kennedy said having the trailer meant “everything” and was a huge next step for the organisation.
 
“We have been able to get kids to learn the awesomeness of being sustainable and reducing waste through schools; with the trailer we will also have the ability to get out to markets, to events and community groups,” she said.
 
“For us it’s about being able to park up, throw open the doors and have all of the information in one place for people to see.”
 
One of Central Hawke’s Bay’s targets in the 2019 Waste Management Plan was to increase diversion from landfill to 48 per cent by 2025. 
 
As part of this plan, and with help from the Environmental and Sustainability Fund - $20,000 per year was made available to Central Hawke’s Bay residents, who meet eligibility criteria, to apply for funding for environmental or waste minimisation purposes.
 
This fund utilised money made available by Council’s National Waste Levy Income. Sustainable Ewe submitted the second application for funding since it was established – the first went to Hunter Park Kindergarten in 2020, with $10,000 given to their river play project. 
 
Central Hawke’s Bay District Council Deputy Mayor and Strategy and Wellbeing Committee Chair Kelly Annand said the project aligned perfectly with Council values and goals going forward.
 
“Our work with Sustainable Ewe allows for a collaboration to promote and provide educational workshops across our district with a strong focus on sustainability,” Mrs Annand said.
 
“The mahi that Sustainable Ewe do is incredible and really valued by the community. To be able to support them through the Environmental and Sustainability Fund is exactly what partnership is all about”. 
 
“The trailer will allow Sustainable Ewe to reach more groups and deliver more community workshops to promote education about waste minimisation and sustainability which is what Waste Free CHB is all about!”
