...to the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council website.
The secret is out... We’re so lucky to live and work in Central Hawke’s Bay!

People are living the ‘CHB’ experience every day and finding the combination of lifestyle, community, and economic success a compelling reason to set up business, house, and home!
Our mission statement sums up what we’re all about:
“The Central Hawke’s Bay District Council will be accountable to its citizens for the good management of the public assets of the District and provide open Local Government at minimum economic cost, with the least possible intervention in the private lives of residents.”
This mission guides Council in many of its policies and planning, as well as helping to ensure these values are reflected in decisions made by Council.
As a territorial authority within the Hawke’s Bay region, we are responsible for
- a population of 13,000
- an area covering 3200 square kilometres
The Council will consist of a Mayor and eight councillors.
Each Councillor represents one of two wards: Ruahine & Aramoana now combined into the Rural Ward and Ruataniwha now called the Urban Ward.. Councillors are elected by voters of their respective ward. The Mayor is elected 'at large' (electors of the whole district). The term is for three years. The next triennial election will take place in October 2010.
The region’s “bread and butter” is still sheep and beef farming, pip and stone fruit, vegetable and grain crops, and dairy farming. However, non-traditional industries are being explored and finding success including top quality vineyards (part of our wonderful Hawke's Bay Wine Country).
Our communities include
- Tikokino
- Ongaonga
- Takapau
- Otane
- Porangahau
- Waipukurau
- Waipawa
- The localities of Patangata, Kairakau, Elsthorpe, Oueroa, Omakere, Wanstead, Wallingford, Flemington, Mangaorapa, Ashley Clinton, Makaretu, Argyll, Pukehou and Aramoana.
Along our coastline, hot sand swirls along seven beaches.

In the West rise the Ruahine Ranges: host to hunting and tramping in native bush.

Rivers with the best trout fishing in the world run through small towns with big hearts and great service industries.

Boutique shopping, community marae, café dining, great schools, fishing, golf, polo, rugby, a sport’s stadium and gym, heated pools... Sounds too good to be true?

Why not come and see for yourself? That’s the wonder of this place... so accessible – yet away from the cacophony of the city.
For most, this place has always just been silently showcasing its worth – too humble for neon signs. For others, this land often shouts out, time and again persuading new hearts and minds to stay.
Beautiful CHB - Caring Community and Outstanding Lifestyle is our district vision – a vision that Central Hawke’s Bay District Council totally supports.
The potential to dream is endless. In Central Hawke’s Bay, the ability to achieve that dream is guaranteed. |
