Water Supply in Central Hawke's Bay

The Central Hawke's Bay District Council seeks to provide, manage and maintain a reliable supply of potable water at least cost to customers and ensure adequate water for fire fighting purposes within designated fire districts.

Water Meters

Water meters are fitted to some properties in township areas, normally on larger sections, or commercial water users. Meters are read in February, May, August and November of each year.

Some high volume users in CHB have their meters read "volume used invoiced monthly". This particular service is available on application to the Utilities Manager Brett Way

For more information about Water Meters in CHB please see our Metered Water Supply Page

Standpipes

Central Hawke's Bay District Council (CHBDC) does NOT allow water to be taken from water hydrants except for fire fighting purposes or by special arrangement.  For more information on standpipes in CHB, please see our Standpipe page.

Water Supply Problems

You can notify the CHBDC of a problem by using the Report A Problem webpage or ring the Council on +64 6 857 8060.

Water Quality in Waipukurau

Waipukurau water is drawn from three shallow bores within the Tuki Tuki River gravels. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the reservoir. Hydrofluorosilicic acid is added to fluoridate the water for oral health purposes.

Water Quality in Waipawa/Otane

The water sources are shallow ground water bores adjacent to the Waipawa River. The water is disinfected with chlorine gas which takes place at the pump stations. Water is supplied to Otane via a dedicated pipe line from the Waipawa reservoirs.

Water Quality in Takapau

Water is pumped from a single bore located at the bottom (North-Eastern) end of Meta Street, into tanks beside the pump station. The water has a relatively high Manganese content which requires treating to remove. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the pump station.

Water Quality in Porangahau

There is only one source of water, a shallow bore beside the Porangahau Country Club golf course. Water is pumped from the bore to storage tanks on Old Hill Road above the township. The water has a high iron content which requires treatment to remove. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the pump station.

Water Quality in Kairakau

There are two bores from which water is pumped to the treatment plant storage tanks, then to storage tanks located on the face of the hill at the northern end of the beach. The water is chlorinated.

Water Quality in Pourerere

The water source is a spring on Ouepoto Station which is tapped and the water gravity fed to storage tanks at the camping ground. At the camp, the water is chlorinated and stored ready for use. This supply is also used for the public toilets but this water is considered non-potable i.e. not fit for drinking.
