Water Supply in Central Hawke's Bay

The Central Hawke’s Bay District Council seeks to provide, manage and maintain a reliable supply of potable water at least cost to customers and ensure adequate water for fire fighting purposes within designated fire districts.

Waipawa River

No contractors are allowed to work on the water supply mains other than those approved by the Council.  Contact Karen Bothwell, Utilities and Properties Manager, on 857-8060 for further information.

New Water Connections

Requests for new connections are to be made to the Community Services Department and an authority must be completed before CHB Works can action any connection.  New connections are charged directly to the customer by CHB Works Ltd.

Note: Water Connections from the Council main, to and including the toby and/or meter maniforld must be installed by a contractor approved by Council for the installation of water connections, at the applicant's expense.

Application Fee $100.00 (incl GST)

An application form for a new water connection is available here. Please complete and return to either the Waipukurau or Waipawa Council Office.

Water Supply Problems

Please ring the Council on 857 8060 for assistance in the first instance. There is an After Hours service that will attend to any problems outside normal office hours.

Water Quality

Waipukurau Water is drawn from three shallow bores within the Tuki Tuki River gravels. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the reservoir. Sodium fluoride is added to fluoridate the water for oral health purposes.
Waipawa/Otane
The water sources are shallow ground water bores adjacent to the Waipawa River. The water is disinfected with chlorine gas which takes place at the pump stations. Water is supplied to Otane via a dedicated pipe line from the Waipawa reservoirs.
Takapau Water is pumped from a single bore located at the bottom (North-Eastern) end of Meta Street, into tanks beside the pump station. The water has a relatively high Manganese content which requires treating to remove. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the pump station.
Porangahau There is only one source of water, a shallow bore beside the Porangahau Country Club golf course. Water is pumped from the bore to storage tanks on Old Hill Road above the township. The water has a high iron content which requires treatment to remove. The water is disinfected by the addition of chlorine gas to the water at the pump station.
Kairakau There are two bores from which water is pumped to the treatment plant storage tanks, then to storage tanks located on the face of the hill at the northern end of the beach. The water is chlorinated.
Pourerere The water source is a spring on Ouepoto Station which is tapped and the water gravity fed to storage tanks at the camping ground. At the camp, the water is chlorinated and stored ready for use. This supply is also used for the public toilets but this water is considered non-potable i.e. not fit for drinking.
