Selling Liquor

If you are selling liquor - you require a licence.  (This includes liquor sold as part of a ticket.)

All liquor licensed premises must comply with the Sale of Liquor Act 1989.  Different types of licences apply depending on whether the sale or supply is for consumption on or off the premises.  Any sale or supply of liquor to the public will be likely to require some kind of licence.  A Liquor Licensing Inspector can help you with this.

Here are the basic requirements:

  • At least one Certified Bar Manager or Liquor Licence Controller will be required to ensure control of compliance with the Act and the Conditions of the Licence.
  • You will be required to also provide a reasonable range of food and low and non-alcoholic options and information on available transport options.
  • You will need to show management strategies to prevent the sale of liquor to prohibited people and to ensure liquor is sold in a responsible manner, from a safe environment with the objective of contributing to the reduction in liquor abuse.
  • You will need to provide an accurate plan of the premises to show where liquor will be sold and supplied.
  • There are building, resource management and food hygiene matters also to be dealt with in relation to liquor licensing.
