Council owns and maintains the district roading and footpath network along with bridges, culverts and retaining structures. Road network maintenance is funded by rates with substantial financial assistance provided by New Zealand Transport Agency - NZTA (a combination of Transit and Land Transport New Zealand) at a level of 57%.
There are 856.7km of sealed roads and 406.4km of unsealed roads in the network. Council also maintains approximately 74km of footpaths throughout the various communities around the district along with 266 bridges and over 5000 culverts and retaining structures.
Council maintains this network to provide a safe, reliable and efficient means of moving people, goods and vehicles around and in/out of the district.
