Plug a Wet Back, it Becomes a Bomb!

From an article released by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board.

"In February 2007 the Board was called to investigate the explosion of a chip heater at an Auckland residence.

One person was admitted to hospital with broken bones and other injuries when the heater exploded, spreading debris over 6 metres.

The chip heater had originally been connected to the hot water cylinder in the house. The owners had the heater disconnected and a new electric hot water cylinder fitted. The wet back pipe work was removed and the connections at the wet back (water jacket) were both securely capped and made air tight.Wetback exploded!

With the refurbishing of the residence the chip heater was removed and put in a skip for disposal.

Another resident removed the chip heater from the skip and placed it onto a lawn for outside use. It was fired up and as it was sealed and airtight, the water developed into super heated steam. The pressure exceeded that which the wetback could withstand and it exploded.”

Another incident occurred as recently as April 2008 where two women escaped injury after the coal range in their property exploded. The pipes had been sealed off and the hot water cylinder disconnected, however when the fire was lit there was a build up of pressure inside the wet back and it exploded.

This is a timely reminder just how lethal wetbacks can be. It may be only a matter of time before a fatality occurs.

Wetback connections should NOT be capped off under any circumstances.

If it is necessary to disconnect a wetback contact a registered plumber.

If in doubt talk to a building inspector at the Central Hawke’s Bay Council on 06 857 8060

The slide show had been moved to our District Images page (and also increased in size to make for better viewing).

Map Updates

We are in the process of updating the various maps available on our site using Google Maps to serve the maps and highlight places on them.  Maps include:

Some of the maps appear at the bottom of pages so scroll down if you can't immediately see the map.  You can zoom in and out of the maps using the tool at the top left of the map or by using the scroll wheel on your mouse.  You can also click and drag the map to move around on it.  Clicking on the icons will show some information about the place and possibly a photograph.

The update process isn't complete.  We intend to add as many services and places of interest (within reason!) as we can.  Any suggestions of useful additions would be appreciated.  Use the Feedback Form to suggest new places.  We need to be able to locate them on the map ourselves so including an address would be good!

Request for Service and Feedback Forms

Did you know you can submit a Request For Service from this website?  A Request For Service is a request asking Council to act on a problem such as loose stock, roaming dogs, roading issues, rubbish and litter, water leaks, traffic and safety issues and so on.  To make a Request For Service, select the Request For Service link from the menu to the left (or select this link).
There is also a Feedback form which you can use to provide feedback on any aspect of Council Services.  We are always interested in ways by which we can improve our service to ratepayers (and compliments are more than welcome!).

Searching this website: How to find information quickly

Did you know you can search this website to quickly find the information you need.  At the top of the menu to the left is a search field.  Typing a word or phrase into this field and clicking on the 'Search' button will seach the entire site for information relating to the search term.  For instance, typing "transfer stations" (without the quotes) and clicking the button will return 14 links related to transfer stations and waste minimisation.  The first link will be the list of opening hours and fees for each transfer station in the district.
