1) If I have a water meter, how much can I use before I have to start paying?

300m3 per annum (822L per day).

2) The Cover is damaged or gone from my toby or valve

Fire hydrant lid has been damaged or removed

I cannot find my toby.

For ALL of the above issues; contact Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060 and we will organise the appropriate contractor to attend to the problem.

3) I have discoloured water coming out of my taps, what might be the problem?

The Cause:

  • The sediment in the water pipes being stirred up due to ‘higher than usual' water usage
  • By water being turned off for a period, and then turned back on, causing a high flow through pipes stirring up the sediment.

The Fix:

  • Run the taps into your bathtub and sinks until the water runs clear.

4) Do I need a back flow prevention device?

On town supply, these are automatically installed on the toby.

5) A Fire Hydrant is leaking, what should I do?

A leaking hydrant is considered to be a water leak. Contact Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060 and we will organise the appropriate contractor to attend to the problem.

6) How long is the water going to be off?

Contact the Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060 as we should have a list of outages, and estimated times.

7) I have a burst water main, what should I do?

Immediately contact the Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060 and we will organise the appropriate contractor to attend to the problem.

8) I have very low water pressure, what might be the problem?

This may be a result of recent work being carried out on a water main, or it could indicate a problem with Council water supply.

It is important to check both inside and outside taps. If the outside tap pressure is OK, you will need to call a Plumber. If it is determined that low pressure exists, contact the Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060.

9) No water is coming out of my hot tap, why?

Is there water coming from the cold tap?

YES - implies a localised house issue, you will need to call a Plumber.
NO - implies a general supply issue, contact the Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060.

10) There is noise coming from my pipes, who should I call?

This is the owner's responsibility, so you will need to call a plumber to investigate.

11) There is water coming through my path or lawn, what should I do?

The relevant issues are the toby box and the leak (the toby may be on the customer's lawn). Any leak from a toby is a Council problem. Contact the Central Hawke's Bay District Council on 06 857 8060 and we will organise the appropriate contractor to attend to the problem.

What direction the water flows from the toby box will be dependant on the topography of the land.

Any leak beyond the toby box is private, you will need to call a plumber.
